François Gagnon
François Gagnon holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the École Polytechnique de Montréal. He has been a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Montreal’s École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) since 1991 and served as the director of the department from 1999 to 2001. Professor Gagnon, who has held the Ultra Electronics Chair since its creation in 2001 (the Chair became, in 2009, the NSERC Ultra Electronics Chair), also set up COMunité, a group bringing together highly skilled, and creative researchers as well as several industrial partners. Through COMunité, which ÉTS recognizes as a strategic forum, Professor Gagnon is able to strengthen his network by pooling all its research activities under a single banner.

His research areas are centered around high-speed wireless communications, modulation, coding and optimization of the digital processing of high-capacity signals, as well as point-to-point military communications. François Gagnon played an active role in the creation of a new generation of high-capacity, line-of-sight military transmitter-receivers by Marconi Canada, now Ultra Electronics TCS. The company received a Coin of Excellence from the US Army for the performance and reliability of its radios. For his long and productive collaboration with Ultra Electronics TCS, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) honoured Professor Gagnon in 2008 with the prestigious Synergy Award (SME category), an acknowledgment of his contribution to scientific research.
